Shower Surprise

I am sleeping in bed this morning covered in a pile of boys. Someone is laying across my feet and another is curled up between my knees and I’m sharing a pillow with someone who's drooling a little. I wake up, but don't move.

I can hear Scott in the shower. He turns off the water and then proceeds to install a new toilet, rip out the vanity and replace some drywall. At least that's what it sounded like. He is so incredibly noisy in the morning. On the rare occasion when we’re allowed to sleep past five am, he always manages to wake some, if not all the boys, up before he leaves for work. So, I continue to lay perfectly still hoping, waiting and praying that none of the boys wake up. As he slams open the bathroom door and busts into the bedroom, I hear Petey start to cry (from the master closet, aka nursery). Without moving, I hiss at Scott to hurry up and get out of here without making anymore noise.

He leaves the bedroom, but proceeds onto the kitchen with his remodeling project. I really have no idea what he's doing out there, but I guarantee he could never ever sneak up on anything. After slamming the kitchen door, he moves onto the garage. Why slip out the front door when you could run the garage door opener and try to wake up at least one more little boy before departing.

Eventually, I hear him pull out of the driveway and I close my eyes and drift back into a few more minutes of bliss. A few minutes turns into an hour. I awaken again still covered by little boys, except now the one curled up between my knees feels damp and warm. I've just been peed on. unfortunately not the first and predictable, not the last. This should be, but isn’t incredibly alarming to me. I imagine real moms would jump up, strip the child and the bed, remake the bed (this would require owning more than one pair of sheets, I don't) fly to the washer, soothe the traumatized child and then disinfect themselves. I however, three hours later, still haven't stripped the bed.

As usual, I'm not getting to the point of my story.

One at a time, I slip out from under the little paper weights. I'm amazed how I can put them into their own beds at night and wake up some mornings with five people and a cat all piled into a bed. Unlike their father, theses guys inherited the sneaky gene. Anyway, I slip my feet out from under one boy. I wait for a few seconds sensing any movements from him and then slowly start to roll out and around the wet boy between my knees. He stirs... I freeze. Soon his heavy breathing returns and I continue to roll out. I freeze again as the side of my face comes in contact with the drool pool accumulating on my pillow from boy number three. Yuck, I prefer the urine over the drool. Urine is warm and mostly sterile while oral secretions are cold, stinky and germ ridden. Once again, getting off focus.

OK, I successfully slip off the side stepping into the empty toddler bed. I stand at the side of the bed and shake my head. I see that the wet boy is Finn. I peel back his jammies to see why his diaper has leaked. Oh, it's leaked because he's wearing two pair of Tommy's underwear and no diaper. Not even potty trained during the day yet, certainly not ready for night. I guess he decided that the diaper I put on him last night wasn't a good idea.

Anyway, I'm a little giddy. I love being up early in the morning and having the rare opportunity to have a hot shower without worrying about who's wrestling, going outside or cooking unattended. I navigate the bathroom with my eyes closed. I love to do this when I'm still half asleep. I turn on the shower, undress and step into complete paradise. I love cranking the water to the hottest setting just to see if I can stand it. Today I can, I lather up with my lavender body scrub eyes still closed breathing in the intoxicating aroma of relaxation. As I feel the water start to pool over the tops of my feet, I'm not too concerned. As usual, we're a little behind on home maintenance. We usually don't fix things until their completely broke, plugged or leaking. So currently our drain has been just a little sluggish. Not anything that's gonna concern me and ruin my spa shower or rain on my parade. I can feel the steam billowing past my face out of the shower probably enveloping all the mirrors and surfaces in fog. I can only assume this as I've been in the shower for about 10 minutes and still haven't opened my eyes.

Next, I feel something reptilian slithering around my ankle and trying to climb up my leg. Just typing this makes my skin crawl. My eyes fly open and I freeze as I stare down at my soapy legs and ankles.

A WIGGLY...

BLACK...

SLIMEY...

WET...

SNAKE...

My breath stops, relaxing shower OVER! I retract my left foot and my shower partner retreats to the other end of the tub. The way he swims makes me vomit in my mouth. It's that very reptilian, flicking and slithering. I’m still spitting as I step out of the tub. Naked, wet and soapy I run out to the kitchen. for, of all things, my camera. I can't find it, so I settle for my cell phone, I call Scott, voicemail, shoot. Water still running, I walk into the steamy bathroom and assess the situation. I can feel my heart pounding as I look over the edge. I'm waiting for him to spring up and attach himself to my face. Luckily, he doesn't do that. He's just swimming around.

I walk back out into the living room, still wet and dripping. I'm startled as someone from the sofa yells, Hey mom, why don't you have any clothes on?"

Because, there's a snake in the shower

So why are you naked?

Because there's a snake in the shower

Your not allowed to wear clothes around snakes?

Oh, I guess that puts my priorities into perspective, I realize that even the best exterminators do usually wear clothes. Although I quickly remind myself that most exterminators also probably do their laundry on a regular basis. Laundry around our house fits into the same category as the maintainance. It usually doesn't get done until it's a flaming disaster. So needless to say, I don't really have any clothes to put on. A slip into yesterday's dirty scrubs.

I look toward the unimpressed unexcitable spectator on the sofa. I'm wondering why he doesn't think a snake in the shower is a strange thing. Gavin really isn't our household wildlife catcher. That's Tommy, but he's still drooling on my pillow fast asleep. Gavin isn't really impressed or interested in wild life. But I decide to give it a try. One of the best parts about having kids is that you can convince them to do all the things you are secretly afraid of. As long as you don't act scared, they have no idea that they should be scared. This being said I start to work on Gavin.

Me: Ummm... Gavin, as I told you earlier, there's a small creature in the bathtub. I'm gonna give you this Tupperware container. If you could just scoop him up and put the lid on really tight, I’d appreciate it. Try really hard not to drop him, he’s probably fragile.

Gavin: Can I have a corndog? I'm hungry.

Me: I would really like if you could just get that little guy out of the tub first, he's probably scared and I don't want him to get hurt. (translation: I'm scared to death of that thing in the bathroom, I need you to be a man and go in there and wrestle it, capture it and get it out of my house)

Gavin: Fine, but I want two corndogs for doin this.

It's 6:30 am, but at this point I would have given him the entire box of corndogs, a chocolate cake and a BMW. But rule number 507 in my casual parenting manual says, never show your fear and never ever show desperation.

Me: If you can successfully get him out to the backyard I suppose I could pay you two corndogs, if you promise not to tell the little boys that you ate corndogs for breakfast.

Gavin: Deal

I hand over said Tupperware and Gavin proceeds into the steaming, lavender scented snake enclosure. I wait nervously in the kitchen frozen corndogs in hand. I'm listening for sounds of distress. I just hear water splashing.

Gavin: Hey mom, he has legs.

Me: What? Just get the cover on, tight.

Gavin proudly enters the kitchen with his catch. It's frantically swimming around the container flopping into the sides and trying to get out the top. The cover falls to the ground and I momentarily panic.

Gavin: Mom, are you scared?

Me: Me? No, I like snakes, but let's set him on the counter and get that cover on again.

Gavin: Look at his legs

Me: No, put the container down, ummmm... You need to eat these corndogs.

I snap the lid on tight and instruct Gavin to carry him outside. Elliot (our orange cat) follows with interest. I see my camera on the way out and grab for it.

IMG_2171

Elliot was most curious about this creature. I had to lock him in the house for the release.

IMG_2172

So there it stood. I was quite relieved to have the mystery creature out of my shower, but not forward thinking enough to release it outside of our fenced in backyard

So here’s the big reveal…

IMG_2174

Ok, so not as scary when you’re not the one showering with it, but still gross enough to make me spit as I type this. He would have been even longer, but he was missing most of his tail.

IMG_2179

After a few more photographs for identification purposes (this may as well be educational), we were ready to release him.

IMG_2180

Apparently this is wear I start shooting in black and white. Most people save black and whites for classic settings. After all, you what’s more classic than a little wildlife removal mission? I guess in my nervous twitching I must have hit some setting on my camera and started shooting in black and white.

IMG_2182

So Gavin gives him the final dump into the grass.

Be free little disgusting creature, be free…

and he wiggled away.

Gavin and I went inside and researched him a little. So it wasn’t really a snake, the little creepy cousin to the snake, a SKINK. Ewwww. I hate that word. SKINK, the name really does him justice though. Slinky, Snaky and gross. Contrary to popular belief, they don’t usually shower with humans and definitely never has there been a recorded case where a skink has sprung up and attacked a human’s face. I think I should email Dr Seuss's people because, There’s a Skink in my Shower sounds like an excellent addition to his children's’ book collection.

So after much excitement, research, discussion, a few more boys waking up I’m in the kitchen elbow deep in French toast batter. I’m teaching Gavin, Tommy and Finn how to make French toast. My parenting technique focuses on teaching my children life skills to ready them for the real world. Shouldn’t all 2, 5 and 8 year olds know several reliable breakfast recipes? I think so. So when my cell phone rings, I wipe the eggs from my hands. I locate the phone under some eggshells and low and behold, it’s the real man of the house, Scott.

How’s your morning he wants to know.

Well….

Me: Did you notice anything strange when you took a shower this morning?

Scott: Oh, you mean that giant lizard thing in the bathtub?

Me: Yeah that… You didn’t want to tell me about it before you left the ho

use this morning?

Scott: Oh, I was gonna tell you, but you told me to be quiet and leave before I woke up any more boys.

Me: OK, well let’s just get this straight. Feel free to wake up every single person in this house and even the neighbors for that matter if there’s ever another reptile in the shower!!!

After our French toast Gavin continued to educate the rest of the boys on all things Skink. He caught my attention as he explained that when being chased by a predator, the skink will “drop” it’s tail. The tail actually becomes disconnected and continues to wiggle around on the floor to distract the predator while the tailless skink slithers away to safety. Interesting fact yes, but I thought back to a week ago when I tipped up the sofa to sweep under it and in the giant pile of corndog sticks, match box cars, one banana peel, books, dirt and playing cards was one shriveled up three inch long lizard tail. At the time I questioned it, but didn’t really give it much thought until now. That means I’ve taken, not one, but roughly four showers with the skink. Elliot must have captured him in the garden, brought him in through the cat door, had a showdown in the living room, been fooled by the old detaching tail trick and lost his catch. No wonder Elliott was so interested.

So history will probably repeat itself as I released the Skink about eight feet from the cat door with Elliot watching from the window.

In a house full of small children and a crazy mother, nothing is ever as it seems.

If a bedroom looks spotless and the boys swear they’ve cleaned it…

look under the bed, they’ve probably just relocated the mess.

If it looks like you’re husband has spent the day catching up on the four foot laundry pile…

check the garbage, he probably just threw out the clothes.

And most importantly, if you think you’ve stumbled upon the illusive, (I’m the only one awake, nothing bad can happen) luxurious, no worries shower…

look down, most likely there’s a Skink in your shower.

At the Park with Dad

I look at photography websites, read photography blogs and even own a dslr for dummies book. I'm always trying to learn new things about our camera. Scott knows nothing about it. He just picks up our camera and shoots. He has no idea what any of the settings are, he just plays around til he likes it. The funny thing is, he often takes much better pictures than me. He had all the boys at the park the other day and just started snapping.
Since he already seems to be a natural, I just try to give him mini lessons. Like tonight when I tried to explain the concept behind the timeless photo. He was still a little confused so I broke it down. "Look at this photo here, super cute, but I just can't appreciate it as much when the boys are wearing WWE t-shirts. It's just distracting and will no doubt have a dated feel in a year or two." I think he got it with out losing too much of his pride.

Maybe I should just stick to being the technical one and let him be the creative natural one. I can take 70 pictures and only save two of them. These three shots came from a roll of four pictures that he took the other day. The fourth one was really good too but one small flaw. I'm saving this lesson for next week. If you're going to photograph all the kids, maybe wash their faces first. Gavin was filthy, so I just couldn't use it. I didn't even have to read that tip in the dummies book, just a mom thing I guess. I do enjoy his pictures and maybe I should take his lead and get my nose out of the book and behind the camera more.

More Northwoods...

Just got Adobe Lightroom, so I'm having fun navigating my way through.
It's a little overwhelming with all the options, but I think I just made myself skinnier... Hmmm...this could be good!

Nothing I love more than a pile of little men!

Congradulatins Class of 2023!!

Dear Mrs Zani and Mrs Mo,

Last fall, I dropped off a slightly apprehensive, nap taking, non name writing, nervous, four year old little boy. Tonight I brought a very outgoing, non napping, name writing, excited five year old boy to his speech therapy graduation. And on Tuesday, (I'm sure you'll breathe a sigh of relief) he will have completed his Pre K program with you.

Thank you for shaping and molding this little creature into a smarter, better behaved, more talented little creature. But thank you also for putting up with us this year. I never wanted to be the PTO super classroom mom, but I think I fell a bit too far to the other end of the spectrum. I admit and own the fact, that I was the mom that didn't bring classroom snacks, didn't have a child with a great attendance record, didn't spend time as a classroom volunteer, even missed a parent conference and lastly, did forget to pick up Tommy on time on more than one occasion. So I humbly own the fact that I wasn't the most cooperative parent in the group but thank you for carrying on without me. You have been very understanding of this time sucking nursing program and seem to understand the pressure I'm under. A student raising little students seems at times like the blind leading the blind.

Tommy has learned so much over the last year, like how to button his own shorts and how to put his shoes on the right feet and how to write his name and how to care for a turtle and how to properly wash his hands. These are all important kindergarten skills, but also important life skills. Who knows when you may need to know how to build a milk crate fort or identify a hairless rat.

I have some good news and bad news. The good news is, he made it, Tommy graduated, the bad news is you're only half way done... You've done a fabulous job with Gavin and Tommy but, there's still two more.
Thank you for touching our lives and shaping Tommy's and we'll see you in a few years with the next one.

Out of the Mouth

Out of context and one sided, these things sometimes sound a little strange, but I asure you they were appropriote at the time.

"Breakin out? What do you mean? Oh, you mean makin out, and no Mommy and Daddy aren't making out... Daddy is just giving me a massage..."

"Dad says you have to wear pants to play on the swingset... Because, he's afraid of the neighbors..."

"Where's the poop? Finn, show mommy where you pooped... Poop belongs in the toliet... Noooooo, not with your bare hand..."

"No, there won't be a principal if mommy homeschools you... No, if they want to be homeschooled, their moms have to do it... Because it's home school... Fine, Dad will be the principal... Because we already have a kitchen... Sure, I'll make you a report card..."

"Well, sometimes the tooth fairy drops the tooth on the way out the door by mistake... No, she knows that she already paid you for that one... I guess she has a scanner or something..."

"Only 169 days left... I know, but it will all be over soon... No honey, a nurse, doctors have to go to school for 10 years... I'm not sure how many days that is, a lot... Who wants to know the difference between hypoparathyroidism and hyperparathyroidism?... I know, mommy doesn't want to know either, but I have to... No, stay home dads don't have to learn that... Well, it's not really a degree, so no school... That's fine, I'm sure you'll make a great stay home dad...

Dear GOD...-

Dear GOD... Thank you for all the great big things in life. But equally important, Thank you for some of the smaller things like glitter and felt and the one pair of sharp scissors in the junk drawer. Thank you for the Bissell Cyclone vacuum that does a great job picking up handfuls of gold glitter off the floor.

Dear GOD... thank you for Men's Warehouse and their really reasonable suit rentals. Thank you also for the tactful women that work there. They are very patient while measuring totally embarrassed 7 year old boys' inseams. Maybe try to convince them to drop the late fees though. They don't seem to have much compassion even when customers have really great reasons why they returned their suit 2 days late.

Dear GOD... Thank You for little boys who are willing to learn all their prayers for first communion. Hail Mary, Guardian Angel, Lord's Prayer, Sign Of The Cross and Act Of Contrition. This was alot of work. Thank you for the long van rides and bad traffic on the way to religion classes that gave us the opportunity to practice all these prayers. Thank You also for eavesdropping little brothers that have no doubt absorbed some of these prayers as well.

Dear GOD... Thank You for little boys that sleep during mass and grandmas that like to hold them. Thank you for the fairly unexciting church music and the slightly off key children's choir that lulls these little boys to sleep.

Dear GOD... Thank You for providing the front pew for us so that Finn has the entire church audience to entertain. Thank you for putting all of the perfectly behaving children all the way on the other side of the church so I don't have to watch them sitting there like perfect little old ladies and feel like a bad mom. Thank You for sitting me near the squealing babies and toy throwing toddlers so I feel like I'm average.

Dear GOD... Thank You for grandmas and their purses and all the fun things they keep in their purses. Thank you for granting these grandmas the patience to let rambunctious little boys wear their glasses.

Dear GOD... Thank You for inspiring holy people to lead our children down your path. Thank You for providing some of these people a sense of humor. This sense of humor helps keep us awake during long homilies. Thank you also for providing a select few priests with a good internal clock, for the record, it's always appreciated when mass ends on time.

Dear GOD... Thank You for these little moments of grace within a tornadoes of boyness. Thank You also for really fast digital cameras that can catch these moments.

Dear GOD... Thank You for teaching me to pick my battles and forgive... When the cake decorator boy at Publix spells Gavin's name G-A-B-I-N, thinks communion has only one m and chooses a girly cake design... Thank you GOD for giving me the grace to give my best smile of approval when cake boy proudly shows me his creation. And finally Thank You for convincing the cake boy that his true passion is cakes and not tattoos!

All This Because I Love You

I carry a purse because you insist when I know I could fit everything important (car keys, cell phone and debit card) in my bra...

I get up out of warm nest of cuddly boys when you are calling and the cell phone is across the room (actually I just send one of the said cuddly boys to get it) your calls are always important to me...

I occasionally make you mashed potatoes (I don't like them, I hate peeling them)...

I try to park nicely in the driveway so you can fit your truck in too...

I act concerned with how clean or messy the garage is when you complain about it...

I try to adhere to the mail system (this is the one where you are actually supposed to empty your own mailbox every day and follow up on the important letters, for the record, I am not a fan)

I only own one cat...

I've held back on adopting 17 little boys from Haiti, a miniature pot bellied pig and a giant gopher tortoise that was on Craigslist the other day for free (you know this kills me)...

We don't have a micro farm in the backyard or a solar power house (yet)...

I occasionally buy soda and beer...

I don't have any pink furniture (just throwing that in, I wouldn't actually do it, but please be thankful that I haven't done it)

I drop the children off at Miss Tammie's because I know you couldn't do it (on a side note you are already at work, but let's focus on me here)...

I spend hours doing meticulous cleaning jobs that don't really matter to me but impress you (this is actually a tactic, if the whole house is a mess, but I can manage to say something like, I vacuumed and polished the patio door track, it's kinda impressive when in all reality it is just a really fun project for a bunch of little boys, a vacuum and a bottle of Windex)

I don't own any Coach purses or have any shoes I paid over $100 for. I do own one pair I got at the thrift shop for $4.00 (which I thought was a bit steep) and found online for $400...

On the note of thrift shops, I limit myself to a Family Thrift outing once per month. If it were up to me, you know I'd be there everyday...

I still kiss you when you forget to shave, OUCH...

I will even sometimes prepare shrimp for you even though the thought of touching and eating something with the toenail still attached grosses me out...

I try to sneak out of the house without waking anyone up Saturday mornings even though I miss you and it would be a really nice time to talk to you without an audience of small boys... but you look so peaceful sleeping this morning, so I'll go out and quietly blog in the 4:30 am peace and darkness...

I do all this because I love you...

Happy Valentine's Day. I am fully aware this is late, but as you know bringing the little boys down the overcrowded sickly pink Valentine isle at Target and then staying up half the night addressing one to each and every class member and misc school staff (janitor, librarian, vice principal, girl in the office, Gavin insisted), takes quite awhile and quite frankly makes me hate Valentine's day. So now that the day has passed and all the left over Valentine's stuff is in the cart stuck in the quiet corner labeled 75% off, only now will I celebrate and acknowledge the true meaning...

I wouldn't want to be on this journey with anyone else. I love you and please enjoy your Saturday with the boys, Sorry the house is a little messy, we were very busy, but we did manage to dust all the ceiling fans...

Happy Birthday to You.

Not Me Monday

It's been way to long since I posted a "Not Me Monday" so here you go.

As a safety conscious mother of four small bite size boys, I'm always cautious. I would never drive my boys down into the heart of the Everglades just because we were bored and wanted a little excitement. I wouldn't dangle my small children in front of any wild hungry animals in the name of creating an unforgetable family memory. I'm a very cautious mother and wouldn't ever consider doing any of the following.

For starters, I would never pay money or walk through the gates of an establishment that refused refunds even if you were sucked of all your blood by a swarm of man eating mosquitoes. I simply wouldn't give a business like this my hard earned money.

I would never visit a highway tourist trap that kept caged alligators on one side and encouraged wild ones like this guy to swim up very near the tourists on the other side. It simply wouldn't be safe. I also didn't see this very same alligator climb up on shore and eat a bird. Yikes!!!

I would never support a business that actually felt it was necessary to post a sign like this. What is their typical customer like? What kind of guests would actually need this sign? Has this been a problem in the past? I would never associate my family with the type of people that need signs like these.

And I definitely wouldn't every send my small children and husband out into a fan boat full of those very same customers. Not to mention the fact that this boat is heading out into the everglades flooded prairies full of snakes and alligators. Like his mother, Gavin would never be excited if the driver illegally fed the alligators his wonder bread sandwich. We would never climb aboard a red neck vehicle like this.

Once again, what type of customers need a sign like this? Certainly not us. On a side note I would never consider teasing some of the animals just to see what they do. Poor self esteem? Attack? Retaliate? Makes me wonder.

I would never walk past a sign like this then do a u turn leaving the double stroller unattended in front of 30 hungry alligators just so I could take a picture. That would be a really bad idea not to mention completely irresponsible.

I also wouldn't ever stand back and snap a picture of Grandpa and Grandma while they walk a little to close to a wild alligator. I also wouldn't be thinking about what the alligator guide said regarding out running an alligator. "You don't have to run in zig zags or climb trees to get away, just make sure you're not the slowest one in the group." I'm definitely not trying to figure out if I could run faster than grandpa.

I wouldn't ever get suckered into paying money to watch the incredible alligator trainer and I would never be secretly waiting for "Charlie" to take a little bite out of her hand. That wouldn't be right.

As if watching wasn't dangerous enough, I would never volunteer my own son to hold the baby alligator. I also wouldn't be rude enough to comment that he felt like a purse. How insensitive!!

I certainly wouldn't give him a chance to eat something a little more bite size. I would also make sure my children Purelled immediately after touching this roadside alligator.

I would never be the annoying tourist that asked for a closer look at the alligators teeth. I certainly wouldn't encourage all the little boys to walk up and get a closer look. That would be very risky!

In the event that everyone survived the alligator tour and air boat ride I would never allow or pay for my family to take a guided swamp buggy tour through the swampy everglades.

I would never get excited when the guide explained that it was home to the black bear, python, water moccasin, and the alligator. I definitely wouldn't hope to see all of these very dangerous animals.

And finally in the event of shear disaster, I would never wonder quietly to myself how quickly these vultures could dispose of the evidence.
